 Ron Sebastian Totem Poles
This Northwest Coast Indian artist makes full-size native totem poles by commission for museums and organizations. He will also carve a short totem pole (less than six feet tall), which is more affordable for an individual collector.

Deposit Terms and Conditions
The cost to carve a totem pole includes several factors that must be understood by the customer. These include:

  • obtaining a pole 
    Ron will acquire a cedar log from the coast, and transport it to his work area located in Hagwilget/New Hazelton

  • developing a design 
    A design will be developed and prepared (sketched) by Ron after consultation with the client. This design will include traditional themes and customer preferences.

  • carving a design 
    A team of carvers will be assembled by Ron to carve the totem pole. The team will usually include experienced carvers Robert and George Sebastian, brothers of Ron.

  • packaging 
    Depending on the length of the pole, packaging will include a a plywood-skinned crate, all painted, with protective medium surrounding the pole.

  • freight and delivery 
    The totem pole must be transported from New Hazelton to Smithers, then it is handled by freight forwarders. International clients may receive the pole via air-freight.

Upon acceptance by the client of the conditions of the design and creation of the pole, a deposit will be required. This deposit will include, but is not limited to:

  • cost to purchase log and transport to New Hazelton BC

  • 50% of the cost to design and carve the pole

  • prepayment of freight: New Hazelton to destination

Estimated Costs (CAN$):

Costs are dependant on the length and style of the totem pole. 

A short log can cost from $2500, while a long log can cost $6000. This includes the review of available logs, purchase, and transportation to New Hazelton.

The time required to design and carve the pole depends on the number of images on the pole, and the length of the pole. Generally, an unpainted pole with typical traditional images will cost approximately $2500. per lineal foot ($5900 per lineal metre), while a painted pole with customer-preferred custom images will cost approximately $4500.per lineal foot ($7900 per lineal metre).  Carved location is New Hazelton, B.C.,V0J 2J0.or on site location. Longer poles may require on-site carving and associated travel costs.

The cost of freight and delivery will vary by destination and size. The shorter poles (less than 16 feet, or 4.88m) are placed in a wood-frame box, sheeted with plywood. All surfaces are painted. The pole is wrapped in a protective cover. This can be shipped by air or ground. Freight costs are From New Hazelton. As an example, a 12 foot (3.66m) pole delivered via air freight to London, England will cost between $2200 and $2600.
